Acest standard stabileşte o parte din vocabularul internaţional utilizat pentru angrenaje tratând numai definiţiile geometrice. Acest standard furnizează, pentru fiecare concept geometric legat de angrenaje, o definiţie unitară valabilă la nivel internaţional, termenul corespunzător fiind ales în fiecare limbă, pentru a reflecta direct sensul definiţiei.
